Evart, Michigan USA

William, William, William

Evart's grandfather was William ARDIS, son of William ARDIS, son of William ARDIS. (There may be more Williams, but we haven't done that work just yet.) And, yes... Samuel had a brother named William ARDIS.

Samuel's father William was born in Ulster (Northern Ireland) UK and lived with his father William ARDIS and his mother Mary Boyd ARDIS, in Tullyvallan, County Armagh, Ulster (Northern Ireland) UK. William was one of fourteen (14) siblings. Seven of those children, including William, would emigrate to Evart, (Northern) Michigan USA as that territory was being opened up to settlement in the 1870s.

William opened a livery in Evart. He returned to Ireland and to England several times, returning with boatloads of horses. He drove the horses from the docks in New York City, overland through New York State and Ontario, Canada. Each night he would camp outside of towns along the way and send word into town that he had horses for sale. William would often return to Evart with lot's of money, but few horses left.

One of William's brothers, S.B. ARDIS, had become quite successful in business ventures in Evart and in Grand Haven, Michigan USA. He was able to finance a number of his nephews, including Samuel ARDIS in starting general stores in the small towns of Northern Michigan. Samuel wound up owning the Ardis General Store in McBain, Missaukee County, Michigan USA.
